Abstract

This paper describes the results of numerical analysis studying the influence of stone column installation on the pressure capacity of reinforced raft with an infinite grid of stone columns. In the first part of this paper, cylindrical cavity expansion was used to evaluate the installation effects of stone column. A numerical model was created with PLAXIS 2D in axis-symmetric geometry to reproduce the lateral expansion. The results showed that the installation of a single column has a main effect on the soil stresses. These effects were represented by the increase of the effective horizontal stress and the improvement of soil stiffness. In the second part of this paper, a comparative analysis is performed on a unit cell model to investigate the influence of each installation effects on the improvement of axial pressure capacity of the unit cell. The results show that consideration of these effects leads to a significant improvement in the axial pressure capacity of the treated ground. Nevertheless, the influence of each installation effect remains dependent on the loading stage.
