Abstract
I have presented a comprehensive study of the J-Q model in the presence of an external magnetic field in both one and two dimensions. To accomplish this I have developed a quantum Monte Carlo program based on the stochastic series expansion with directed loop updates and incorporating quantum replica exchange. In this chapter I summarize my findings and offer some brief concluding remarks.
