Abstract

With the work contributing to this thesis, a new quantum information system emerges and is developed to a point where it can now enable new fundamental research and technological innovation. We have created a new kind of quantum dot, used it as both an optically and electrically-addressable single photon source at different wavelengths, and used it as a host to trap single-spins; the first steps towards a quantum memory. The medium used in these experiments is atomically-thin Transition Metal Dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers: a 2-dimensional (2d) platform which offers the promise of low power, miniaturised and scalable technology.
