Abstract

Universities increasingly rely on information technology to reach their strategic objectives in the scopes of management, academia, and research. Nevertheless, the application of information technologies at the university level has been indiscriminate and undervalued, and there exists a major rift between senior management and its use. IT Governance has appeared as a new paradigm that allows organizations to control and direct the use of IT. The interest in its adoption at universities has grown, but there is still much to investigate the issue. This article aims to contribute to the development of the research of IT Governance at universities. A review of the investigated aspects and a comparative analysis of the models of IT governance as applied at the university level have been done. The methodology used for this work was the proposal by Kitchenham (2004). After performing the analysis, it was verified that only 3% of the research in this area has been realized at the university level. Moreover, the developed models corroborate that each university has its own particularities and must adapt to the organizations it serves, and do not include aspects such as Critical Success Factors or the final draft (issued November 2014) conceptual model for governance of IT from the Proposed update of ISO/IEC 38500.
