Abstract
To truly understand surgical disease, one must have a comprehensive knowledge of the underlying anatomy and embryology. This chapter begins with a review of the anatomy of the rectum, anus, and pelvic floor. The anatomy of the colon will then be discussed in a similar manner. Finally, the chapter will conclude with a review of normal development, followed by a review of abnormal development and all of the disease states associated with abnormal development of the colon, rectum, and anus.
