Abstract

This chapter looks at ex-static absorption and hyper-reflection herein from the perspective of so-called “ipseity disturbances” found in the literature on phenomenological psychopathology . These are changes in self-awareness that putatively unify the various heterogeneous syndromes contained in the schizophrenia diagnosis. While patients with schizophrenia, pathologically hyper -reflect as a result of an altered sense of self , namely a weakened self-affection, I speculate that musicians can experience similar states as a result of a superior bodily control and self-affection which affords them the opportunity of experimenting with their own consciousness.

Notes

  1. 1.

Before onset of psychosis, people on the schizophrenia spectrum may experience a pervasive sense of foreignness also known as a “pre-delusional state” (Sass and Pienkos 2013).

  2. 2.

A lack of belonging to a world is related to the notion in phenomenological psychopathology that schizophrenia is a pathology of intersubjectivity (Henriksen and Nilsson 2017; Salice and Henriksen 2015; Henriksen et al. 2010).

  3. 3.

On embodiment in schizophrenia, see Stanghellini (2009).
