Abstract

Diversity at farm level spreads the risk of uncertainties of climate and market, aids efficient use of available resources and additionally increases farm output by enhancing soil health, pollination and minimising pests and diseases. Thus it has multiple benefits but needs intelligent integration of all the components of diversity at all the input and output levels. Intensive monoculture with chemicals has been the major cause of the failure of industrial agriculture, and enhancing farm diversity may be the best solution for the restoration of such a production system. A major part of world food comes from smallholder farming, and diversity assures sustainable livelihoods for small-scale growers. Designing diversity for better productivity with sustainability is discussed in this chapter.
