This chapter explains the problem with overlaying gridded data. It explains why there is a need to remap an existing grid onto a different grid (a procedure called regridding) and elaborates on the details of the specific case of spatial disaggregation as well as the general case of regridding ill-aligned grids. Following the introduction of the problems related to overlaying spatial data, particularly in the context of gridded data, it elaborates on related work and state of the art, and continues with the formulation of the problem and the concept of the solution considered in this work.
