Abstract

This chapter explains the current need for processing and combining data that carries a spatial component. A brief introduction first clarifies what exactly is data with a spatial component, before moving on to the conceptual spatial models that are commonly used in geographic information systems: feature based and grid based, along with their uses. The chapter elaborates on the details of the different models and why working with data in different representation models is unavoidable.
