Abstract

This chapter provides a detailed overview of the current dynamics on power generation markets. It first reviews the current competitiveness of various power sources, and analyzes the underlying factors which define the evolution of this competitive landscape. A critical review of the forecasted evolutions also leads the author to propose an alternative scenario with a different competitive paradigm in the coming 20 years. It then reviews the current frame of investments and discusses its possible evolution and the challenges associated. Finally, it focuses on the growing penetration of renewable energies in the generation mix, particularly distributed, and introduces key challenges associated to it.
