Abstract

The atomic nucleus is comprised of protons and neutrons which are known as nucleons. The protons have a positive electrical charge. The neutrons have no electrical charge. The number of protons determines the atomic number of the atom (Z). This determines also the number of orbital electrons and therefore the chemical element to which the atom belongs.
