Abstract
Both arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) and spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) are diseases which have been well characterized in both the past and recent literature. Although they began with quite disconnected histories, in recent years their paths have crossed in an interesting manner; the relationship newly defined by the tools of molecular genetics. I have been given the task of defining this history and relationship and have found it an interesting challenge. My contribution will be in the form of a critical review and new data will not be presented.
