Abstract
In 1976 Wilcken and Wilcken found evidence of abnormal methionine metabolism in patients with premature and unexplained coronary artery disease (Wilcken and Wilcken 1976). The following 15 years saw some reports published on the relation between tHcy levels and cardiovascular disease. Large-scale epidemiological studies on hyperhomocysteinaemia and cardiovascular disease were initiated only after the introduction of reliable routine methods for determination of tHcy at the beginning of the 1990s. A large number of studies have since been published.
