Abstract
Homocysteine is metabolised through two major pathways : transsulphuration and methylation. Normally, about 50% are converted in the transsulphuration pathway to cysteine. Homocysteine condensates with serine form to form cystathionine, which is cleaved into cysteine and α-ketobutyrate. The other 50% are remethylated and form methionine, which represents an important component of the one-carbon metabolism.
