The Pathology of Vessels

Abstract

The pathological interpretation of vascular trauma should take three factors into account. Firstly, vascular damage depends on the type of injury and each type leaves a distinctive imprint. Secondly, vascular injury may have medico-legal significance, especially when related to surgical manipulations [1–3].The task of the pathologist may be to determine whether the vascular changes are directly caused by injury or represent a complication of a pre-existing lesion [4, 5]. Finally, traumatic injury to vessels rarely occurs alone and neighbouring tissues are likely to be damaged. The vascular sequelae of injury are often worsened by this injury to surrounding structures [6]. Vascular damage resulting from operative techniques is discussed in chapter XII.
