Abstract

Some 30 cases of isolated dislocation of the scaphoid have been reported. This dislocation is sometimes combined with fractures of the carpal bones or of the lower end of the radius. These patients are always men aged between 30 and 60 years. The injury is usually very violent and the wrist if forced suddenly into hyperextension and ulnar deviation in every case where the mechanism has been established. Often, this occurs in a road traffic accident; the hand holding the handlebar of a motorcycle can end up in this position.
