Abstract
Gastric cancer is still amongst the 10 most common causes of cancer death in both sexes even though its incidence in Europe, North America and Australia has been decreasing in recent years [1]. Until recently gastrectomy has been the only treatment offering any real prospect of cure for patients with gastric cancer but when they present and have a diagnosis established in only little more than half of the patients is the tumour localised sufficiently for there to be any prospect of cure by gastrectomy. Five years survival results of patients treated by gastric resection with apparent total removal of the tumour have in the past rarely been reported as better than 25 % [2, 3, 4, 5].
