Abstract
Treatment of ventral and incisional hernias has evolved during the past years. The availability of prosthetic material to either reinforce or bridge defects in the abdominal wall has made possible to reduce recurrence rates compared to suture-only techniques. The adoption of the Rives-Stoppa technique as the procedure of choice for incisional hernia repair, as well as the improvement in materials have been of significant help, but the overall results are still somewhat disappointing. The need of extensive dissections to assure a proper exposure of the different layers of the abdominal wall in order to accomplish a good mesh placement also has lead to an increased hospital stay, postoperative complications and return to normal activity.
