Résumé
Les registres ont été définis par le Comité national des registres (CNR) comme «des structures assurant un recueil continu et exhaustif de données nominatives, intéressant un ou plusieurs événements de santé dans une population géographiquement définie, à des fins de recherche épidémiologique et de santé publique par une équipe ayant les compétences appropriées». En France, les registres se sont mis en place progressivement à la suite d’initiatives locales essentiellement dans trois domaines: le cancer (1975), les malformations congénitales (1973) et les cardiopathies ischémiques (1984). Souhaitant encadrer ce développement, notamment pour les registres du cancer, et mettre en place une véritable politique dans ce domaine, le gouvernement a créé par arrêté, le 10 février 1986, le CNR. Celui-ci est placé sous la double tutelle des ministères chargés de la Santé (Direction générale de la santé) et de la Recherche (Institut national de la santé et de la recherche médicale).
