Résumé

Depuis plus de quarante ans, la stimulation nerveuse périphérique (SNP) appartient à l’arsenal thérapeutique des douleurs neuropathiques réfractaires au traitement médical. Dès 1965, Wall implanta — avec succès — des électrodes afin de stimuler les nerfs médian et ulnaire au niveau de l’avant-bras. Peu après, la stimulation du nerf infra-orbitaire fut également rapportée (1967). Tout cela s’appuyant sur les bases scientifiques de la théorie du portillon décrite par Wall, Sweet et Melzack [1, 2]. Depuis, la technique et les indications ont évolué mais la définition de la SNP demeure : il s’agit d’une stimulation électrique ciblant le système nerveux périphérique et appliquée à un nerf unique dont la lésion est distale. Cette stimulation cherche à produire une paresthésie dans le territoire nerveux desservi par ce nerf.
