Constipation vient du latin constipatio ou resserré. Le vocabulaire français est d’une richesse incroyable quand il s’agit d’imager cette turpitude ô combien source d’inconfort: « avoir le bouchon ficelé, travailler pour la marine, faire des billes, chier des cordes à puits, pondre un train de marchandises, avoir le train bloqué dans le tunnel… » Dans des temps à présent éloignés, aller à la selle de façon facile et régulière était synonyme de bonne santé. Ainsi, l’expression « comment ça va? » en découlerait… Pensez-y la prochaine fois, si vous répondez « c’est dur » ou « ça baigne »… La constipation peut être source de bien des tourments. Ainsi, dans Les oreilles du Comte de Chesterfield et le chapelain Goudman, Voltaire fait dire au philosophe que la chaise percée est le premier mobile d’action des hommes. Il cite comme exemple Cromwell qui « n’avait pas été à la garde-robe depuis huit jours lorsqu’il fit couper la tête à son roi » et affirme qu’ « au contraire les personnes qui… s’acquittent tous les matins, dès qu’elles ont déjeuné, d’une bonne selle aussi aisément qu’on crache… sont douces, affables, gracieuses, prévenantes, compatissantes, officieuses. Un non dans leur bouche a plus de grâce qu’un oui dans la bouche d’un constipé ».
