Abstract

In 2008, only in the United States, there were 11,070 estimated new cases of invasive cancer of the uterine cervix. Over the last decades, there has been a decrease in the incidence and mortality in developed countries, whereas cervical cancer remains the second most frequent cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality in developing countries; this discrepancy being largely due to the widespread implementation of cervical cancer prevention programs in the former.
