Abstrait

Parmi les outils dont le réanimateur dispose pour évaluer et surveiller le système cardiovasculaire des patients, l’échocardiographie est sans doute l’un des plus intéressants non seulement en raison de son caractère non invasif, mais surtout par la richesse des informations anatomiques et fonctionnelles fournies. Toutefois, la finesse et la fiabilité de l’analyse échographique sont très dépendantes de l’opérateur qui effectue l’examen, ce qui constitue une limite de la technique. De plus, la répétition des examens à but de monitorage n’est pas toujours possible quand l’observateur compétent n’est pas disponible. De ce fait, l’échocardiographie est plus souvent utilisée comme outil de diagnostic que comme outil de monitorage. Enfin, contrairement au cathéter artériel pulmonaire qui peut mesurer la saturation veineuse en oxygène, l’échocardiographie ne fournit aucune indication métabolique et ne peut donc pas préjuger du caractère adéquat ou non de l’état circulatoire d’un patient à un instant donné.
