Charney’s Influence on Physical Oceanography*

Abstract

Jule Charney published only five papers in the field of physical oceanography, but his influence was profound and far-reaching. The published works speak for themselves, but the personal connections do not always come through in the papers. We wish to convey what we know of his influence.

* Revision of a contribution to the Charney memorial symposium at MIT, March 1983.
