Abstract

Satellite radiometric measurements can be converted into images of clouds, land, oceans, atmospheric water vapor, dust, and smoke. Much effort has been expended in learning to interpret these remotely sensed images, particularly with respect to identification and development of significant cloud types and patterns. This knowledge has given meteorologists a better understanding of synoptic-scale storm evolution and the atmospheric processes that control mesoscale weather.
