Charles Franklin Brooks becomes Director; the Observing Program is Restored and Mount Washington Reoccupied: 1931–1934

Abstract

Charles F. Brooks was born 2 May 1891 at St. Paul, Minnesota. As a youth, the severe thunderstorms that occur in that part of the country impressed him and served to spark his interest in the weather. He applied climatology early in life when he prepared snow-shoveling contracts based on the season or by the storm. At Harvard, he received an A.B. in 1911, an A.M., under Professor Rotch, in 1912, and a Ph.D. in 1914. His Ph.D. in meteorology was the second to be awarded in this country. He then went to Washington, D.C., to work for the Department of Agriculture. There he prepared the climatic section of the Atlas of American Agriculture. He then took a position as instructor in geography at Yale University.
