Abstract

The hill and bedrock on which the Blue Hill Observatory is firmly anchored, according to Kaye (1983), has its origin in the Ordovician Period, about 450 million years ago. Preceding that period, about 630 to 525 million years ago (late Proterozoic to Cambrian periods), a great thickness of sediments accumulated under shallow seas, lakes, and floodplains in the area that is now eastern Massachusetts. The sediments were mostly shale and mudstone, but also contained some gravel rock (conglomerate) and several thick layers of volcanic rock from volcanoes that were occasionally active in the area.
