Grenade Experiments in a Program of Synoptic Meteorological Measurements

  • Chapter
Meteorological Investigations of the Upper Atmosphere

Part of the book series: Meteorological Monographs ((METEOR,volume 9))

Abstract

Rocket grenade experiments have provided information on winds, temperatures, pressures and densities in the earth’s atmosphere up to altitudes of 90 km since a time prior to the IGY. In this paper the role of the grenade experiment in a program of synoptic meteorological measurements from selected global locations will be discussed. The experimental accuracy, as determined by error analyses, will be briefly reviewed. Recent results of grenade experiments used to study noctilucent clouds, diurnal temperature variations, stratospheric warmings and mid-winter heating of the high latitude mesopause will be presented.
