Abstract

In recent years several experiments with ionized barium clouds have been carried out in the upper atmosphere between 130 and 2000 km. The experimental technique for evaporation and the process of ionization are described. By observing the drift motions of the ionized barium clouds, the electric fields have been determined in the upper atmosphere. Results are given in particular for measurements at mid-latitudes.
