Abstract

From this book, you might have the impression that most scientific communication is formal, through peer-reviewed manuscripts and conference presentations. We have an opportunity to practice for these formal communication vehicles through our informal hallway conversations, memoranda, e-mails, and group meetings. Unfortunately, these everyday forms of communication can end up being ineffective too, resulting in misunderstandings, lost opportunities, and wasted time. This chapter presents an introduction to improving the following types of professional communications: memoranda, résumés and curricula vita, cover letters, e-mail, and meetings.
