Abstract
With a worldwide lifetime prevalence of 0.6–1% schizophrenia represents one of the most serious global health challenges. The 1-year incidence of schizophrenia is 0.2–1.0 per 100 (pooled rate 0.34), lifetime incidence 0.4–2.2 per 100 (pooled rate 0.55) and annual incidence 3.6–200 per 100 000 (pooled rate 11.1). Services with the capacity for early detection have reported even higher annual rates of 16.7 per 10 000 in men and 8.1 per 10 000 in women among 15- to 20-yearold individuals.
