Abstract

Hypomania may affect up to 50% of depressed patients [1]. However, it is frequently underdiagnosed in clinical practice, as there is a relative overdiagnosis of major depressive disorder at the expense of bipolar II disorder. It has been estimated that the correct diagnosis (and appropriate treatment) of patients with bipolar II disorder may be delayed by as many as 8–10 years [2,3].
