Abstract

In this chapter, snow events that occur during autumn or spring and define the margins of the snow season are described. The primary months for significant snowfall are December, January, February, and March (see volume I, chapter 2). However, major snowstorms can occur with much less regularity in November and April, and even in some rare instances in October and May. Most of the snow events occur inland, although there are cases where measurable snow occurred near the immediate coast. Examples of early and late season events are provided to illustrate several of the more unusual storms and to illustrate that, every now and then, wintry weather can visit the northeast United States early in the autumn and well into spring.
