Abstract

The retroperitoneal space may be defined as that part of the lumbo-iliac region which is bounded anteriorly by the parietal peritoneum, posteriorly by the posterior abdominal wall, superiorly by the twelfth rib and vertebra and inferiorly by the iliac crest and the base of the sacrum. The lateral borders are formed by the quadratus lumbora muscles.
