Abstract

Surgery for sliding hiatal hernia and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is widely accepted and practiced. With the advent, refinement, and popularization of minimally invasive techniques, laparoscopic antireflux surgery has become the mainstay of operative therapy in most institutions where appropriate expertise exists. The outcomes following laparoscopic fundoplication, including symptom relief, quality of life indices, side effects, complications, objective control of GERD, and reintervention rates, have been well-elucidated and have generally been judged favorably when compared to medical therapy or open surgical alternatives.
