Abstract
Approaches and techniques for mitral valve surgery are changing, with increasing application of minimally invasive surgical approaches and development of simplified techniques to facilitate repair. Spurred by new technology and instrumentation, increased patient demand, and incipient competition from percutaneous techniques, cardiac surgeons are exhibiting renewed interest in minimally invasive approaches for mitral valve surgery.1–4 This enthusiasm for minimally invasive mitral valve surgery has been complemented by recent development of simplified techniques for valve repair that reduce operative complexity and time.5–8 This report will (1) illustrate key technical aspects of the most widely applied minimally invasive approaches for mitral valve surgery, (2) critically examine results of these minimally invasive mitral valve operations in order to determine their safety and effectiveness, and (3) describe recent simplifications in techniques for mitral valve repair that facilitate minimally invasive approaches.
