Abstract

This chapter discusses the implication of robustness and capability indices in the optimisation process of an airline’s fleet. The introduction of European Commission Regulation No 1617/93 of June 25th, 1993 aimed at minimising observed bottlenecks in air traffic. The importance of maintaining specific hub-and-spoke systems, as well as optimising slot controls have been raised by many authors and field experts to determine optimum market-related performance and shares. The introduction of Taguchi’s design of experiments (DoE) is applied as a means of improving overall performance levels. Conducted research reveals that the application of robustness and capability indices may lead to contradicting outcomes regarding the most appropriate courses of action. The aim of this work is to introduce a technique capable of effectively addressing contradicting outcomes by optimising processes and procedures-alike and thus minimising potential losses to the company.
