Abstract
This chapter describes calculations using blade element programs based on those developed in Chap. 3. First, the accuracy of the blade element method is assessed by comparison to measurements of power and thrust. The distribution of these quantities along the blade is then shown to be roughly linear in radius. The effect of the blade pitch, and the number of blades is then considered, as a prelude to discussing the conditions for optimal power extraction. The final section addresses the important issue of maximising the power-extracted by a wind turbine rotor using a circulation argument that extends the final section of Chap. 3.
