Abstract

We assume that the reader has some knowledge of basic group theory. Here we summarize what we use, mainly without proofs. Apart from reminding the reader of these ideas, it also enables us to introduce the reader to our notation. The exception to this is a couple of results at the end of this chapter that are unlikely to appear in first group theory courses. In the main we use them only once or perhaps twice in the latter half of the book, so readers might like to put off reading them until they actually need them. We present full proofs of these results.
