Abstract
In this fifth and last of five chapters on multimodal usability methods (Section 6.2.2), all methods presented have users interacting with a system model prototype. A prototype is an experimental interactive model of the target system, or parts of it, that is used for data collection, testing or demonstration. This may be anything from a mock-up that only exists as a slide show to a fully coded and virtually completed system that is submitted to a final field test. If the prototype is partially or wholly unimplemented, it normally takes human intervention to make it interact with subjects. The methods presented include two very different uses of human-mediated interaction, two different sets of conditions for testing an implementation and a special method for studying information processing in subjects during interaction.
