Abstract
This chapter deals specifically with the problem of processes containing unstable poles and inverse response zeros. The relative positions of the poles and zeros have a direct impact on the level of the stability of the system and thus dictate the complexity of the controller. Fortunately, these cases are rare. However, such systems are becoming more commonplace as modern integrated design techniques use physical systems that are manufactured intentionally unstable in order to maximize the performance envelope of the controlled process.
This chapter may be omitted if this book is being read to develop an understanding of the predictive control concept only.
