Abstract
In this chapter we address the tuning procedure. The objective is to obtain the desired degree of accuracy, dynamics and robustness required by a process in order to fulfil its operational specifications. These three requirements represent the fundamental objectives of regulation. The question is how the 3 PFC tuning parameters: basis function, reference trajectory and coincidence horizon are able to cope with these 3 requirements. The issue of trade-offs between the different specifications is discussed. The concepts of gain time, delay margin and sensitivity function are described. The chapter concludes by presenting a practical tuning aid for first-order systems.
