CG projects that ignore the work of a civil engineer will not be convincingly realistic, and opportunities for more interesting environments will be lost. In some cities, nearly half the area is given over to traffic-related structures. Architecture is important to any CG artist who builds a city, but it is not the only thing required. For architecture to be convincing, it must be attached to its environment in a convincing way. This usually requires the creation of some amount of infrastructure: roads, sidewalks, gutters, stoplights, street signs, etc. (Fig. 4.1).
