Abstract
1. Epidemiology a. Peak incidence fourth and sixth decades (later in men) b. Classification criteria (1987 revised criteria from ACR) i. A sensitivity and specificity of about 90% ii. Must meet four of the following criteria 1. Morning stiffness (joints) lasting 1 h, present 6 weeks 2. Soft tissue swelling (arthritis) of three joint areas seen by physician, present 6 weeks 3. Arthritis of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP), metacarpal phalangeal (MCP), or wrist joints, present 6 weeks
