Abstract

1. First described in 1877 by the British physician Sir James Paget a. Used the term osteitis deformans b. Evidence supports its existence in prehistoric times 2. A localized disorder of hyperactive bone remodeling a. Abnormal osteoclasts accelerate the process of normal bone turnover i. Large numbers of highly multinucleated osteoclasts ii. Result in extensive bone resorption b. Followed by recruitment of osteoblasts and increased bone formation i. Osteoblasts appear normal
