Abstract
This chapter describes the machine tools used in the automotive industry. The world trends in automotive production are discussed to stress the significance of this industrial sector in the global economy. A description of the typical automotive components with machining operations is also discussed. The use of flexible machines vs dedicated machines is analysed in the context of current trends in the automotive markets. Finally, new machine tool and process technologies of particular relevance to the automotive industry are described.
