Plasma Vertical Stabilization

Abstract

In this chapter we present two examples of the design of vertical controllers for two different tokamaks: the experimental reactor ITER, which is currently under construction, and the tokamak operating in Switzerland, the TCV. In both cases, the design of the vertical controller is carried out as a first, separate step of the overall plasma position, current and shape controller design. As already discussed in Section 4.3, this separation is possible because the vertical controller operates on a time scale that is much faster than the time scale on which the current and shape controller is required to react.
