Engaging the Ageing: Designing Artefacts to Provoke Dialogue

Abstract

This paper discusses ongoing work by the authors on how the design and deployment of artefacts can be used as a method of engaging stakeholders in research. A case study, Living rooms, is described where we used “critical artefacts” to develop our understanding of the design of the home to support independence and wellbeing in later life. Through the project we have developed key themes and design concepts that will directly inform further work on designing for tomorrow’s older people. We describe several examples to demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.
