Abstract
In engineering, most subject areas make use of specific mathematical tools. In the design and analysis of discrete-time systems, the most important of the mathematical tools is the Z-transform. In this chapter, we develop the Z-transform and its properties, and we show how to make use of the Z-transform to analyze discrete-time linear time-invariant systems. In the following chapters, we treat the problem of digital filter design.
