Abstract
At present, there are several variable-speed WECS configurations being widely used. In this book, some typical configurations are studied, which have the following specific properties:
-
they are based upon variable-speed horizontal-axis wind turbines — with two or three blades — and fixed- or variable-pitch;
-
the mechanical transmission is single (fixed) multiplying ratio, either rigid or flexible
-
the electrical generator is either synchronous (permanent-magnet) or induction generator (squirrel-cage/doubly-fed), equipped with front-end AC-AC power electronic converter, thus ensuring wide range variable-speed operation; the power transferred to the grid is controlled through the power electronics.
